WELCOME TO CHESED 2011- July 11 August 11, 2011.
The Summer Fellowship Program for Jewish High School Students. CHESED 2011. Community Service, Ecology, Culture and FUN!
Message from Dr. Hune Margulies, Director of the CHESED Programs.
I am very pleased to announce CHESED 2011 to Peru's "wonder of the world" Matchu Picchu, and to the magnificent and mysterious Easter Island off the Pacific coast of Chile!
This year, CHESED 2011 will combine community service work and ecological immersion in the midst of Indigenous populations throughout two different countries and regions of Latin America: the South and Amazonian regions of Peru, and The Easter Island off of the Pacific coast of Chile. CHESED 2011 will bring us this year to within some of the most beautiful, historic and ecologically magnificent sites in the world.
During our Peru exploration, we will base ourselves in the history and archeology-rich city of Cuzco, the old capital of the historic Inca Empire. We will visit and hike the Inca ruins of the 'Matchu Picchu", declared one of 7 "wonders of the world". We will hike through long stretches of the famed and historic "Inca Trails". We will visit and work with the local villages throughout the region of Peru's "Sacred Valley". We will travel South through mountains and rivers to the border with Bolivia and reach the Inca's and Aymaras' sacred "Titicaca Lake". We will sail in small unique canous to the "floating straw-islands" in the middle of the lake and visit with its its inhabitants. From the south we will travel East to the Peruvian amazons in the border with Brazil. There we will work with communities that reside in the heart of the Amazons pristine and age-old forests. After that we will fly for an entire week outside of Peru to what is considered to be probably the most mysterious island in the world: "Easter Island", a Chilean territory in the Pacific Ocean. We will tour and explore the island, its different sites, its people and its natural wonders. We will also have many cultural presentations, classes, time to enjoy each other's company and many shopping tours to the unique local markets along our routes.
Our program, as always, is strictly kosher and shomer shabbat.
Please carefully review the registration page below, which includes instructions for tuition payment. We strongly encourage you to reserve your participation early, as it is always difficult to bring with us all the participants who wish to join our program. Our program works in areas considered ecologically sensitive and we always face a limit in terms of the numbers of people we are able to travel with in our CHESED programs.
Please do not hesitate to call or write anytime. If you'd like to organize parlor meetings in your homes, I'd be happy to participate. We could dialogue in person about the program and answer all your questions.
Be well, and once again, welcome to CHESED 2011
Hune

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT OUR CHESED PROGRAM:
CHESED '2011: Community Service, Culture, Ecology and Fun in beautiful Peru and the magnificent Easter Island. July 11- August 11, 2011.
Our Summer Chesed programs enjoy three main unique characteristics:
1. CHESED: It is a program centered on community service (Tzedakah and Chesed). Jewish high school students from the US working together to help Indigenous communities and ecological regions in two different countries of South America, Peru and Chile.
2. CULTURE: It offer a rare opportunity to visit in an organized and methodic way with age-old local Indigenous communities.
3. ECOLOGY: It will take our fellows into some of the most exciting and wonderful natural wonders of Southern America, from the Amazons to the Andes Mountains and to the unique and magnificent Easter Island.
And of course, let's not forget FUN. Plenty of activities, entertainment, sports, music, theatre, dance and friendship..
The Fellowship Chesed 2011 Program Mission: To help with the important work of preservation and restoration of age-old cultures and ecological settings. The principal idea behind our travel program is to offer our fellows the opportunity to spend a meaningful and important Jewish Summer experience. Our program is a time for "applied" chesed work. Community service is combined with fun, ecology, learning, education, and with a variety of other activities related to culture, ecology and social skills. There is also a great deal of “fun” built in. The ecology of the regions we will be traveling to are beyond compare, and the cultural richness of the local Indigenous, peasant and others communities is as beautiful as it is inspiring. We will have workshops run by local people in arts and crafts, Indigenous jewelry and archeology. We will also study the history of Jewish migration to the Spanish speaking world. We will learn their music, observe their dances and participate in many other enjoyable activities. We will have Spanish classes. We will visit impoverished villages, as well as engage in other forms of aid to those who are being assisted by local Jewish communities. Part of this program will be to expose the students to the marvels and intricacies of organizing solidarity aid on a transnational basis.
A Note on Supervision: Our Summer Fellowship program is Jewish in nature and in character. We are an observant program and students are expected to participate in all religious activities, keep the shabbat and eat glatt kosher foods only. What this means is that participants are required to sign a code of ethics and behavior. We expect and will enforce proper behavior and a right ethical and moral attitude throughout the entire trip. Our fellowship program will apply a zero-tolerance policy in regards to alcohol, drugs, tobacco and any other inappropriate behavior towards fellow students, staff and the community at large. We will have with us counselors that will serve as Directors of Religious Life. The counsellors will accompany the group throughout the entire trip and be responsible for assisting with all aspects related to the well being, safety and welfare of our Fellows. We will also have 24/7 security personnel, a nurse and local ground personnel. I myself travel with the group and am responsible for the overall safety, welfare and well being of all participants, students, counsellors and other staff. Participants should anticipate that supervision will be taken very seriously. The safety, health, welfare and well being of our students is our paramount responsibility. Fellows agree that in the event of a violation to the code of ethics and behavior, they will face possible expulsion from the program at their parents' sole expense and responsibility.
Where and When: The program will commence at the airport in NYC on July 11 and end on August 11, 2011. During the first leg of the trip we will travel to exciting and historic Cuzco, the capital of the old Inca Empire. From there we will travel South to Lake Titicaca in the border with Bolivia and East to the Amazons in the border with Brazil. From Peru we will fly to the magnificent and mysterous Easter Island. In each location we will engage in community and ecological service. We will visit with our Jewish friends in Cuzco and participate in some of their communal activities. The city of Cuzco retains much its regal splendor and historic character. Old Cuzco is one of the most exciting cultural and architectural urban centers in Latin America. During our stay in the Easter Island we will sail through the island, snorkel with sea lions and turtles, visit the white sand beaches and enjoy all sort of natural encounters. We will travel to owe-inspiring mountains and water falls, hike, sail and tour throughout magnificent surroundings. We will get to know the peoples who live in those mountain highs and in the Forest and on the Island. We will visit important historic ruins, and enjoy daily eco-adventures.
The CHESED program a life-time of special and unique memories. CDPA is experienced and active in the work of providing extensive services and solidarity engagement with Indigenous communities. The Jewish community in Lima is very active in extensive chesed work. The Lima kehila maintains an active networks of internal mutual-aid services and programs.
Our program will bring our kids together with their peers in Cuzco, and as a group, engage in joint work activities, tours, socializing and learning. In Peru, the Jewish communities are very Zionistic and Israel plays a central role in their Jewish education and identity. One of exciting parts of this trip is our ability to interact in an organized manner with a variety of very diverse and beautiful local cultures. Educationally, this will be an experience our kids would not normally be able to pursue on their own. At the same time the ecology of the surroundings and the culture of the local peoples are extraordinary. We will explore many different species of fauna and flora, volcanoes (from the outside..), lakes, animals in their natural habitat. We will be lodging at safe, sanitary, pleasant, comfortable and licensed lodging facilities. The lodging will be at properties registered and supervised by the local Tourism Ministries and regularly inspected by tourism and health officials
(Important Note: the actual daily itinerary is subject to change in consideration of climatic conditions and other considerations beyond the control of the program director and the Chesed 2011 staff).
A few words about safety and security: As a general statement, every one of our tours contains a strong component of security and safety. This is obviously very important to us and also, on a personal note, I often bring my own kids to the trips. Foreign travel is not without risk, but this trip is not a risky one. We never travel to any country or region within a country that is deemed even remotely to represent a safety risk for American travelers. Peru and Chile are ranked very high in safety by the US State Department and the CIA. For the purposes of this program to Peru and Chile, we will have two separate sets of security arrangements. As we travel and transfer, we will have a team of security guards traveling with us from place to place. On the ground, in addition to our permanent security guards, each hotel and National Park has in place its own elaborate system of internal security, such as rangers, tourist police and security personell posted at the entrance to the hotel in coordination with the central police stations. In addition to that, it is my practice to register our groups with the American Embassy and send notifications to the police
precincts along our routes. We exercise caution and common sense and we trust our local hosts, our security guards, community centers and other experts to guide us in the most safe and reliable manner.
Please do not hesitate to call or write us anytime. 914-439-7731. CDPA-at-cdpa-americas.org
